About the Learning Center

For over 20 years, PLAN’s Learning Center (LC) has provided affordable academic support services to students in and around the Pen Lucy neighborhood. The LC provides opportunities for children in 1st-8th grade to receive one-on-one tutoring in either math or ELA (English language arts). Tutoring is offered 2 nights a week for 2 hours per session. Students meet weekly with a committed volunteer tutor who provides not only academic help but also mentorship through everyday life. The goal of the LC is to aid members of Pen Lucy toward upward mobility by offering tools for academic improvement.

Study Island

For over 20 years, PLAN’s Learning Center (LC) has provided affordable academic support services to students from Pen Lucy and the surrounding neighborhoods. Children in 1st through 8th grade receive weekly one-on-one tutoring in either math or English language arts (ELA). In addition to academic help, our committed volunteer tutors provide mentorship to help students navigate everyday life. The goal of the LC is to support members of the Pen Lucy community toward upward mobility by offering tools for academic improvement.

One-on-One Mentorship

We know that relationships are our most powerful tool for fostering academic, personal, and spiritual growth in our students! That’s why PLAN pairs each LC student with a caring, committed adult tutor. Tutors guide students through the Study Island program, and are there to explain a challenging math or ELA concept. Each 2-hour LC session also includes time for relationship-building exercises, fun group activities, and faith-based lessons led by an LC Supervisor. Because we value quality over quantity in student-to-adult relationships, we focus on nurturing a sustainable number of strong and transformative mentoring partnerships (roughly 20 per semester) to make sure that each student gets the best service that we can provide.

Our Results

Our commitments to cutting-edge educational tutoring and one-on-one mentorship have really paid off! Here are some of our recent accomplishments:

  • 85% of LC students improved from “basic” to “proficient” or “advanced” for their performing grade level on reading or math assessments. On average, the PLAN LC student group has performed above or equal to Study Island users statewide.

  • On averaaverage, LC students enter our program performing more than one academic year behind in sight word recognition. We have seen on average an 88% improvement overall since 2010 [ND1] as measured by the Slosson Test

  • Our attendance rate surpassed 90% over the last 5 years.

  • On average, nine out of ten student participants return to the LC for the subsequent academic year, and a majority of our volunteer tutors return to continue working with their students!
